A Serbian volleyball player has been suspended for two matches after she made a racist, anti-Asian gesture during an international match against Thailand. Sanja Djurdjevic was caught on camera stretching her eyelids during the match, according to the FIVB Disciplinary Panel Sub-Committee. Sanja Djurdjevic was pictured on camera narrowing her eyes with her fingers, causing outrage from fans online.
The player has since apologised along with the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, who described the incident as a simple misunderstanding .
The federation has also been fined 20,000 Swiss francs (£15,832; $22,392).
The money will be donated to a cause tackling discriminatory behaviour and/or to fund educational programmes on cultural sensitivity for the global Volleyball Family, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced on Tuesday. ....

The Serbian volleyball player who made a slant eye gesture while playing against Thai opponents has been suspended for two games, CNN reports.
Cameras caught Sanja Djurdjevic stretching her eyelids during Serbia’s June 1 match against Thailand in Italy. The FIVB Disciplinary Panel Sub-Committee released a statement saying the gesture violated disciplinary rules.
Djurdjevic issued an apology on her now deactivated Instagram account, CNN reports.
“I am aware of my mistake and I immediately after the match apologized to the whole Thailand team,” she wrote.
The Volleyball Federation of Serbia issued an apology on Facebook, calling the incident a “simple misunderstanding.” ....
