Before. cnn s natasha bertrand joins us live with her new reporting on this. this would be in response to the u.s. support of ukraine, obviously, natasha. reporter: exactly, john. in addition to that, u.s. officials believe that putin s risk tolerance here has just gotten a lot higher in general, as evidenced by his invasion of ukraine, which many, of course, in the west thought would be folly and panned out that way. and because of that, because he has been failing in ukraine, because the west has been supporting the ukrainians and because russia is really isolated right now from the global community, u.s. officials worry that putin could lash out here, including by attacking the u.s. elections. of course, the midterms are coming up and they could be a significant target for the russians. now, what we re told is that u.s. officials are very worried that perhaps russia could go further than ever before in its cyberattacks on the u.s. election by directly attacking voter infrastructur ....
We don t get it right now that the next election and certainly 2024 are really going to be a mess. i think people are correct that, at least for now the white house is entirely focused on their economic plan. the big question is when and if they get it, are they going to pivot then and demand something really substantial from joe manchin. i ve made the suggestion that we should include some voter infrastructure since joe manchin is knocking out parts of the bill. why don t we put some stuff in there that he, frankly, is supposed to support, part of a compromise that he endorsed. but this is very, very serious stuff. i think people do not appreciate how few tools the justice department now has. they don t have section five which is the pre clearance provision for these sorts of changes. section two has been eviscerated. ....
Those that wants to be the conveyer of violence in our community. let s bring in the president of the naacp, derrick johnson. you put out a statement that caught my eye the other day, after the infrastructure bill passed the senate, you talked about voting infrastructure and you said that now that the senate is moving forward on roads and bridges and infrastructure, the most critical thing that joe biden can do is focus on voting infrastructure. talk about that, if you will. voting infrastructure is to ensure that the devices that we are using are adequate, the nation cannot afford interference to ensure the integrity of the election. you have the convenience of the instant count but the reliability of a paper ballot so you can verify the true will of the voters of any jurisdiction. but most importantly the voter infrastructure could also increase the standards so we ....
White male votes in this country. and democrats continue to find a way to cater to their interest first as opposed to catering to the wants and needs of the vibrant, multiracial democracy that has been forming for the last 40 years and will certainly dictate the demographics ander goe the electoral politics of the next 50 year. so if i had a little bit more confidence in where the democratic party was putting its resources and energies in terms of building a electoral vibrant democracy i would be a lot more confident in potential outcomes and how we could stop subversive efforts such as this. i m also not that confident because i m seeing state legislatures, democratic parties not filing the bills and building the infrastructure we should be building to build voter infrastructure. i m proud of what the texas democratic did in the senate this past week to subvert that voter suppression bill, but we need a lot more of that and we need a lot more aggressive, affirmative voter protection a ....
