The Brigade Boys and Girls Club has named NiJel Thomas its 2020 Youth of the Year. 
The 74-year tradition recognizes local youth for their exemplary leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. Thomas was previously a finalist for the award in 2019, the club announced in a news release Thursday. 
When I think of all the qualities I admire most in an individual, perseverance, determination, dependability, leadership, and integrity, I think of Nijel,” New Hanover County Brigade Boys and Girls Club Executive Keith Whitaker is quoted as saying in the release. “This young man will be successful in life not only because of the previous mentioned qualities but because he genuinely cares for others and the well-being of the whole.”  ....
