Three full days of public submissions made for plenty of suggestions and criticisms from the public for the council’s plans, so this week’s column looks at some highlights. On the first day of the hearings on Tuesday, there was a broad range of speakers and topics brought to the table. While some submitters used their five or 10 minutes of speaking time to focus on a single issue, others took aim at a wide range of topics in the short time allocated. ....

OPINION: I appreciate that councils can operate on a near-geological time scale of slowness. Nothing gets done quickly or that efficiently, often way too expensively too. I’m not talking about the Waimea Dam debacle here either, but the historic Golden Bay Grandstand. A little over three years ago, Tasman District Council caved into strong people pressure and abandoned their last-minute plans to demolish the 1898/9-built structure, one of the last pioneer-built barrel vaulted roofed grandstands left in the country. ....
