Major clean up after storm damage closes tracks on Taranaki Maunga

There is other damage including a slip below the Plateau to Dawson Falls section of the AMC, where the track is still accessible, but caution is required.
Tree windfalls on the Waingongoro Track on the Maunga, and at Ratapihipihi and Everett Park Scenic Reserves will hopefully be cleared this week.
SUPPLIED/DOC
Recent storms on Taranaki Maunga have brought down trees, closing tracks and access to huts.
The team is still making its way through the network of tracks both on and off the Maunga.
Trampers heading out need to take extreme care, be aware they may encounter damage and be prepared to turn back.

River E.coli contamination result of farm run-off after heavy rainfall

The Kaupokonui Beach river mouth was temporarily closed after E.coli was found in water samples.
E.coli contamination in two South Taranaki rivers at the weekend was the result of run off from farmland after heavy rainfall, the Taranaki Regional Council says.
Public health warnings not to collect shell fish, plant life or swim at the Waingongoro and Kaupokonui river mouths were issued after water sampling showed high levels of E.coli (Escherichia coli) in the rivers.
E. coli bacteria can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and mild fever.
Regional council science manager Victoria McKay said the high readings of E.coli in the rivers had arisen from contamination after recent heavy rainfall.
