The United States imposed on Thursday sanctions on two Türkiye-backed Syrian armed groups and some of their leaders accused of human rights abuses in areas under their control. “The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is designating two Syria-based armed militias and three members of the groups’ leadership structures in connection with serious human rights abuses against those residing in the Afrin region of northern Syria,” it said.

With accusations and claims of two Turkish-backed militias profiting from human rights abuses against civilians in Afrin, the US has imposed sanctions on them with immediate effect.

The sanctions were imposed on the Suleyman Sah Brigade and the Hamza Brigade, as well as three individuals, due to their involvement in human rights abuses, abductions, and looting against Kurds in Northern Syria and Afrin
