Monster featuring Kelvin Harrison, Jr., as Steve Harmon, an honor student whose world comes crashing down around him when he is charged with felony murder. Directed by Anthony Mandler, Monster, per press release, follows the teenager’s dramatic journey from a smart, likable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison. The book’s synopsis adds: “Guilty or innocent, Steve becomes a pawn in the hands of ‘the system,’ cluttered with cynical authority figures and unscrupulous inmates, who will turn in anyone to shorten their own sentences. For the first time, Steve is forced to think about who he is as he faces prison, where he may spend all the tomorrows of his life.” ....
Walter Dean Myers’ classic 1999 novel Monster is finally getting its cinematic adaptation thanks to a powerhouse cast starring Kelvin Harrison Jr., A$AP Rocky, John David Washington, Jennifer Hudson, Nas and Jeffrey Wright. The story follows Harrison’s Steve, a promising young artist whose rise is interrupted when he is implicated in a robbery that goes tragically awry. It’s not pleasant reading, but the book is enormously powerful (it was nominated for the National Book Award) and the movie promises to be a similarly harrowing experience. The star book agent will co-run the department alongside Keya Khayatian. UTA agent Jason Richman is getting a promotion. The rep will now co-lead the agency’s media rights group. Richman, who has been at UTA since 2010, will run the group alongside long-time motion picture literary partner Keya Khayatian, who has helped lead the group since 2017. UTA’s media rights department boasts a wide-ranging roster of authors, books, articles, podcasts, journalists, estates, life rights and thought leaders. The group has closed over 250 deals in the past 12 months alone, including close to 200 deals since the beginning of the global pandemic.
