By Patrick Keck - pkeck@aimmediamidwest.com
PORTSMOUTH To boost its response to code enforcement matters in the city, CE officer Andy Gedeon and City Engineer Nathan Prosch proposed multiple changes to the department before Portsmouth City Council Monday.
In the past few weeks, Gedeon, Prosch, City Manager Sam Sutherland, and City Solicitor John Haas have been discussing what can be done to improve the department’s abilities.
“As we all know, we have been battling a big fight with code enforcement,” said Sutherland during the City Managers session that evening. “I believe we finally got something to put to writing.” ....

Extra lifeguards, $50,000 going to McKinley Pool
By Patrick Keck - pkeck@aimmediamidwest

In addition to two investments totaling $50,000, $30,000 through the Capital Investment Budget Program and $20,000 from an anonymous donor, the lifeguard shortages that have plagued McKinley are not expected to be an issue this year.
Through conversations with Shawnee State University swimming coach Gerald Cadogan, a commitment of 10 to 12 lifeguards has been secured and their training will begin this Thursday at the SSU pool. This exceeds the preferred sum of five, which will allow for more scheduling flexibility. ....

Gary Jenkins, high school student continues active 3rd Ward campaign
By Patrick Keck - pkeck@aimmediamidwest.com
PORTSMOUTH Most people his age have their attention set on their homework assignments, prom, and the epic highs and lows of the high school experience. Gary Jenkins does that as well, plus considerations for what will make Portsmouth a better place to live.
Improving the city’s infrastructure, promoting economic development, and advocating for zoning and code enforcement upgrades are the central tenants of his 3rd Ward candidacy. If elected, the Portsmouth West High School senior would be what City Clerk Diana Ratliff says would be the youngest council member since at least 1980. ....
