island in new york. on long island irene s storm surge flooded downtown long beach. some streets in manhattan also flooding but the water started to recede and new york s evacuation order is being lifted this hour. in its sweep up the coast irene has killed 15 people across six states. more than 4 million people overall without power and these amazing pictures show some of the damage when irene made landfall as a hurricane. for place like new york city, the storm wasn t as bad as many feared but as janet napolitano said earlier today, it s not over yet. no matter where you are from north carolina to maine, we encourage you to stay off the roads as much as possible so that we can keep them clear for first responders and for vehicles who are working on power restoration. we also encourage everyone to continue listening to the instruction of their state and local officials and to advice the ready.gov for tips on how to stay safe after the storm. we want to show you m ....
good morning to you all. welcome to this cnn sunday morning, a special edition here. suzanne malveaux joining me, t.j. holmes here with you. we have special coverage of hurricane irene which is getting closer and closer and closer to new york city. anderson cooper is live in greenwich village there. john king on long beach for us this morning as well. already what a morning it s already been. very well foreshadowing the day that s in store for new york and north. an incredibly massive hurricane, rain-making hurricane irene, continuing her trek up the eastern seaboard. take a look at this. still a category 1 storm, 75 mile-an-hour winds. take a look at these pictures, though, the eye could be moving over atlantic city, new jersey right about now. we are keeping a close eye on that. the current track has irene moving towards, of course, new york city. all eyes on new york. they ve seen some flooding in some areas already. a number of power outages at least, 400,000 re ....
reporter: rob marciano, let s see if he can hear us. here s in long beach and they re seeing intense wave action. rob, can you tell us? reporter: i can t hear the program, so just tell me when to go. reporter: anderson, long beach, the winds remain the same and if anything have picked up. irene continues to roll this way. irene is still a hurricane, although you would describe it as a minimal hurricane. i have been in a lot of minimal hurricanes, and it s a still a hurricane. we re taking damage on the boardwalk right now as water continues to fall in. it s tough to see with the connection, but those winds are massive. that surf is pounding the shoreline and has completely wiped out the man made berm they put up to protect the hotel, the boardwalk and that town. and we ll walk this way and show you the lifeguard building, the headquarters there for i don t know how many years ripped away from the foundation and pinned down. that water is not supposed to be there. ....
