A Future Space Tourist Asks: 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go'?

A refundable deposit in 2010 put me in line behind hundreds who had purchased suborbital space tickets before me. Thirteen years on, I still haven’t flown.

to our unity pilot kelly for her first space flight. three minutes of weightlessness and views of our planet that only astronauts have ever experienced. you are so much more connected to everything than you would expect to be. like, you felt like a part of the team, a part of the ship, a part of the universe, a part of earth. it was incredible. we welcome our crew back as they come in for landing. as unity glided back down to the new mexico desert, there was jubilation and relief. i'm still up there and it's just amazing that you can land so smoothly on the runway, coming back from space. safely back on earth, jon told me his experience was better than he ever imagined it would be. looking at earth from space, the curvature of the earth, the blackness of space — the pure clarity was amazing.

virgin galactic is planning to do this monthly going forward, which is a good thing because they have a hefty backlog of passengers. we have a couple of firsts today. >> this is the first majority female spaceflight the first mother daughters duo and first olympian john good win how were mentioning he bought his tickets 18 years ago for $250,000. since then diagnosed with parkison's but still making the trip today at 80 years old. what makes this unique is we are not launching a vertical rocket. looks like two airplanes fused together on top of a spaceship. it will take about 90 minutes in total for the passengers to go through their flight. i got a look at this in a similarity yesterday. it will take 4560 minutes to make it up to space almost. one minute of vertical acceleration and then they will experience three to five minutes of weightlessness. pretty cool views of the earth and then descend back to earth. ainsley, we are hoping for a 10:30 eastern takeoff. the only thing that is going to

of weightlessness and they'll see the curvature of earth against the blackness of space. nbc's marisa potter is following the latest for us. also joining us, theoretical physicist mishu. when we will see takeoff here? >> any minute now. hopefully we can pull the live stream up for you in a moment, you might be confused, you might be saying we're talking about a flight that is supposed to happen in five minutes. the flight is under way. it is a 90-minute flight overall. that mother ship and the spaceship together are flying through the air right now. they're going to reach a height of about 50,000 feet. that's about 9 1/2 miles. those final safety checks are being done every step of the way. and then once it reaches a safe altitude, then that rocket ship will launch just over the mother ship and that will be 50 miles

above earth and then there will be several minutes of weightlessness. when we talk about some whole experience, those three minutes are what this whole entire experience are about, ana. we're talking about a 90-minute flight in total for three minutes of weightlessness that every single one of them has probably spent their entire life waiting for and at the very end, that spaceship will glide on it a runway. virgin galactic takeoffs and landings, not like anything we have seen before. >> let's keep watching this. this is space tourism now. this is a new age of travel. do you think the world is ready for this? >> well, we'll see. but i think richard branson of virgin galactic has done it again, a number of firsts. the first time we have a mother/daughter combination, the first time we have citizens of the caribbean into space, the first time we have an ex-olympian being on board, and the second time we have somebody with parkinson's disease being sent into space.

floating around, weightlessness and you were mentioning a number of firsts. also the first majority female flight with the crew and passengers. they're getting the atmosphere, not black ceiling. this will last 3 to 5 minutes and start their descent. what's unique about this flight is they are taking off and landing on the runway behind me just as you would on a normal airplane. not the vertical rocket launch. more palatable if you are a consumer going into space. the cost, john goodwin paid $250,018 years ago. i don't know if you heard that. that's what they call the sonic boom. that means we're reentering the atmosphere. we are on our descent back and land behind us. back to john. he waited 18 years for this moment and looks like he was having a wonderful time floating around there.

thing. the airplane takes it up high, the rocket ship is dropped and then the rockets turn on and this is what will go up into suborbital, will reach space for about four minutes, and the passengers will be able to see the earth, that beautiful curve of the earth. and feel weightless. look how fast they're moving. >> what is this -- what are they experiencing right now? >> right now they're experiencing a lot of acceleration, right? they're being pushed back in their chairs. it is like when you hit the gas, but big time. and then eventually when the rocket turns off, they'll feel as weless. they'll feel the weightlessness of space and see the curve of the earth. >> that's unbelievable. you can't really do that anywhere else, right? you're saying it is mock 3, three times the speed of sound? >> yes, yes. that's what they need. they need to -- this doesn't have enough energy to get it actually into orbit, but it can get it far enough that it is above the atmosphere. >> check it out. it looks like they're in a -- it

statistics on this. now, what happens is that rocket ship then reaches a certain altitude, and then they experience, everyone on board that you're seeing strapped in there, experiences three to four minutes of weightlessness. that is what it is all for, and we just talked about how this is now the space race for commercial space flight, chris, so what you're going to hear from is the mother/daughter duo, this is really special, the first mother daughter duo to make it to the edge of space, and what this trip meant for them. listen for yourself. >> i'm hoping to give myself that confidence to try new things. >> what are you looking forward to the most? >> just looking back and seeing our beautiful planet and then looking across to see my daughter's face. hopefully this will inspire other people as well to go beyond these fears that's holding them back from the dreams that they have tucked in their little side drawer. open your side drawer, take your dreams out, conquer your fears and go get them.

customers on board your fox business kelly o'grady live in new mexico. what is the reaction so far, kelly? >> gosh, there was so much excitement on the ground here, sandra. it was a historic day. what is crazy is we had a front row seat and took off on this runway right behind me. a number of these space flights and what struck me about galactic and unique is it takes off like a normal airplane. they call it the mothership here that is what takes the space capsule almost to the brink of space, detaches, and finally makes its way to the outer rim here the astronauts there spent 3-5 minutes of weightlessness grinning from ear to ear. a ten ticket cost $500,000 or $100,000 per minute of weightlessness but it was the number first, the mother daughter duo, the first majority female space flight and the first olympian john goodwin. he bought a ticket for
