Thousands of laptops help with Wirral home schooling

A Wirral councillor has welcomed the announcement that pupils across the borough have benefited from 4,851 laptops and tablets to date, hitting an important milestone in the process.
More than one million laptops and tablets have now been delivered to schools and local authorities across England, as part of a £400 million investment aimed to support schools and young people for years to come.
The news comes after the Department for Education last month announced a further 300,000 laptops and tablets to help even more disadvantaged children and young people learn at home. ....

Plans for new homes on Irby green space refused

A proposal to build houses in a much-loved green space was refused last night.
Wirral Council’s planning committee rejected plans for two detached housing with separate garages on land to the rear of 9 and 10 Copse Grove in Irby.
By eight votes to two, councillors agreed that the plans would be harmful to local amenity  and blocked them.
Geoff Walmsley, a local resident, said the green space which could be built on was probably more than 100 years old and appeared on old maps of the area.
Stressing its value to the community, Mr Walmsley said a petition signed by 72 residents called for the application to be blocked and that locals were used to a quiet, peaceful area with lots of wildlife providing appealing natural surroundings. ....

Wirral Council says that schools in the borough are preparing to welcome back all children and young people this term, with primary schools open from tomorrow.
A statment released by the local authority follows an interview with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on BBC this morning, in which he said there was no doubt that schools are safe and pupils should return.
The government announced on December 30 that secondary schools would not fully reopen for another two weeks.
Councillor Wendy Clements, Chair of the Children, Young People and Education Committee said: “As we’re all too aware, COVID-19 has brought with it many challenges - not least of which the impact it’s had on our children and young people’s education. ....
