Due to the lack of opportunity for the wood carving group to meet, he has been doing more projects on his wood lathe lately, and has been dedicating more time to this style of wood-working in his home shop. “I’ve always enjoyed working with wood and making stuff,” he explained, noting he first bought a second-hand lathe some 40 years ago when he and wife Nancy lived in Swift Current, but it wasn’t a very good quality lathe. About a decade ago, a friend in Weyburn, Stan Sampson, asked if he wanted to buy his lathe, and it was a much better quality piece of equipment. ....
A graduate from the Weyburn Comprehensive School in 2020, Arliss is a first-year engineering student at the University of Saskatchewan, and she was so excited when she heard about this project, she signed up for it in July before she even started school. The U of S Space Design team is working with Saskatchewan Polytechnic to design, build and assemble the cube satellite, which will measure 10 by 10 by 20 centimetres. Arliss explained there are currently around 1,367 cube satellites in orbit right now, mainly used for research purposes, educational and commercial uses. This satellite, which will be known as RADSAT-SK, will have an experiment on board along with a small camera, and it will be in orbit for a year before it comes back down to burn up in the atmosphere. ....

Weyburn Rotary members Doug Loden and Bob King were part of a North American Youth Exchange conference held via Zoom, with representatives from Rotary clubs in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, and from other countries around the world. “One of the main speakers said one of the best parts of Rotary is the youth exchange program, because for many of the students it’s a life-changing experience,” said Loden, who has served as a counsellor for many past exchange students to Weyburn. He shared the story of one student who was in on the Zoom call, a former exchange student from a small town near Edmonton who went on an exchange to Denmark. ....
The development and construction of the solar project is being done by Natural Forces, explained Amy Pellerin, the senior development manager, along with information provided by Andrea Bradshaw, the construction manager for the project. Southern Saskatchewan has some of the highest exposure to sunlight in all of Canada, noted Pellerin, making this location ideal for a solar energy project. “This is why we are excited to have our first utility-level solar project in southern Saskatchewan,” she said. “We have a contract to produce 10 megawatts AC. We can produce up to 14 MW DC, but we’re limited to 10 MW,” said Pellerin, adding later that anything produced over and above 10 megawatts is spilled electricity that won’t be used. The project will have a line to the SaskPower substation, where the power will go directly onto the power grid, and was one of the reasons this site was selected as no additional infrastructure was needed to enable this project to supply ....
