Usually the SAG Awards are the first of the major peer groups to hand out statues in the new year, but 2021 is proving to be even more change-inducing than 2020.
The 27th Annual SAG Awards were pushed a couple of times, first due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and then when the Grammys decided to have their show on the same night SAG was planning to celebrate. This led to the WGA Awards kicking things off, with PGA following soon after.

But, the additional time did not seem to affect SAG ballot outcomes by much. Netflix’s “The Crown” picked up its second consecutive drama series ensemble, for example, while “Schitt’s Creek” wrapped up its run with the SAG after nabbing an Emmy and a Golden Globe for its final season. Additionally, Jason Sudeikis, Catherine O’Hara, Mark Ruffalo and Anya Taylor-Joy also followed their February Golden Globe wins for “Ted Lasso,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “I Know This Much Is True” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” respectively, with statues from SAG.

As voting opens for the Directors Guild of America Awards, two top contenders include first-timers Darius Marder (Amazon Studios’ “Sound of Metal”) and Florian Zeller (Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Father”). Also in this episode, Awards Circuit Podcast roundtable reacts to the WGA Awards nominations that had just four women among its 31 screenwriting nominees. On the positive side, the nomination high points included “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Palm Springs” in best original screenplay and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “The White Tiger” in best adapted screenplay. What does this mean for their Oscar chances? Listen to the podcast below!

The awards season’s narrative has been the “year of the women,” as female filmmakers, screenwriters and artisans have been making strong cases for nominations at the Oscars in categories like best picture and director. The Writers Guild of America Awards, however, might have missed the memo, only nominating four women over two films: Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Jena Friedman, Erica Rivinoja and Nina Pedrad, three co-writers from “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
In the three categories for original, adapted and documentary feature, 31 total screenwriters were nominated, four of which are women, and three come from the same feature film.
