Posted: March 10, 2021 By Erin Knutson The City of Fernie renewed its support for the Community EcoGarden at its Monday (Mar. 8) meeting as part of an initiative that Wildsight Elk Valley has cultivated over the past 18 years. The EcoGarden will celebrate its 18th Anniversary this summer with Wildsight thrilled by the city’s continued endorsement. “I’m excited that council is reaffirming its support for the EcoGarden this evening,” said Dawn Deydey, community program coordinator for the Wildsight Elk Valley Branch. Since it arrived in 2003, the garden has been an educational tool for the community while allowing members to grow and harvest their own crop in individualized garden plots. ....
Posted: February 9, 2021 Local conservation and public safety programs get funds Non-profits are receiving more than $11 million from B.C.’s Community Gaming Grants to boost conservation and public safety programs that will benefit British Columbians around the province. A total of 14 projects in the East Kootenay are getting $427,250 in this funding round. Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs stated, “This funding ensures community organizations can continue to provide programming to enhance public safety through emergency programs like search and rescue, and to steward and preserve our ecosystems for generations to come.” The province is providing about $4.8 million to 138 environmental organizations in 2020-21. These programs will create opportunities for people to learn about, connect with and protect nature. ....
