The New England Patriots reportedly plan to hire veteran NFL coach Ben McAdoo as an offensive assistant under Alex Van Pelt.

He started interviewing Wednesday night and accepted the job Thursday evening. Van Pelt, 53, spent the past four seasons as the Browns' offensive coordinator, but did not call plays or have final say under head coach Kevin Stefanski. Now, he's in charge.

Van Pelt, 53, was fired in Cleveland last month after four seasons with the team. During his tenure, the Browns offense ranked in the top half of league scoring ever year but one. Van Pelt has extensive experience coaching quarterbacks and previously served as an offensive coordinator with the Bills in 2009.

Brown, 37, was permitted to interview as Carolina conducted its offseason head-coaching search after firing the man who hired him, Frank Reich, midseason. Brown joined the Panthers last year after serving as a Rams offensive assistant from 2020-22. He is the fourth coach to interview for the Patriots' offensive coordinator job who has experience working under Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Robert Kraft told the world that the Patriots would be deciding on their next head coach in a matter of days, and there was only one person they could hire without going through the traditional, timely interviewing process. The Patriots hired Jerod Mayo as their new head coach on Friday morning, a source told the Herald.  Mayo, who previously served as the Patriots' linebackers coach, had a clause in his contract with an agreement that he would be Bill Belichick's successor, according to a source.
