A request from Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart to retire from the Air Force instead of facing a court-martial for sexually assaulting a subordinate officer has been denied by service Secretary Frank Kendall.

The secretary's decision means Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart, only the second Air Force general in history to be charged with a sexual crime, is set to be tried by court-martial in June after being relieved of command of the 19th Air Force.

Stewart's case marks the second time in history that an Air Force general officer has been formally charged with a sexual crime. The projected start date for the trial is June 17.
