On 12 August 2022, Salman Rushdie, the author of the book The Satanic Verses, was attacked as he prepared to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, an arts and education centre in New York state.
The point of the fatwa was not only to punish Salman Rushdie for his blasphemy, but to intimidate others in the West.
The writer had no idea his novel would unleash such anger and become a litmus test of freedom of expression
Rushdie was stabbed on stage just before he was about to give a lecture in southwestern New York state.
