On March 26, Penn State’s historical “Old Willow” tree that sat on University Park’s Old Main Lawn fell due to strong winds. Legend has it the tree grew from a cutting the first Penn State President Evan Pugh brought from the home of English poet Alexander Pope, according to the plaque that sits on Old Main Lawn. The tree was first planted in 1859 by William Waring. However, nearly 98 years ago, the first Old Willow fell in a windstorm in August 1923.
