Community gardens have been an integral part of Portland neighborhoods since they were first established in 1975.
The city has 57 community gardens that are developed and operated by neighborhood volunteers and the Portland Parks and Recreation staff. Since the coronavirus quarantine renewed people’s interest in gardening, community gardens have been more popular than ever.
In early April, the parks department’s community gardens wait list grew to more than 2,000 entries from 1,340 people, all hoping for one of the 2,544 community garden plots in the program, said Laura Niemi, program coordinator. Plots are assigned through June as they become available, but Niemi said she doesn’t expect to see much turnover this year. ....

The Carlilian Foundation has added two new trustees to its board, the foundation announced Wednesday. 
Jennifer Phillippe Connors, a Niskayuna native who lives in Saratoga Springs, and Spero Peter Zoulas, a native of Schenectady who lives in the Woodlawn neighborhood, were recently voted on to the board, according to a press release from the organization. 
The organization was created to provide capital improvement grants to organizations to benefit the residents of Schenectady County.
Connors is a first vice president and financial adviser at RBC Wealth Management, which provides financial advice and wealth management solutions to people and organizations. She is also a member of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Action Council. Connors received a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston College and a Master’s Degree in business administration from Georgetown University.  ....

Knoxville neighborhood organizations receive $19,500 through city program


The Neighborhood Small Grants Program works to support community-building activities and strengthen Knoxville neighborhoods.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Knoxville s neighborhoods will be able to thrive and grow stronger after six organizations received a total of $19,500 on Friday, through a grant program.
The Neighborhood Small Grants Program is meant to encourage neighborhood organizations and residents to connect with each other to respond to issues. It is also meant to help communities develop the ability to implement neighborhood-involvement strategies.
The grants are also meant to support efforts to form neighborhood groups in unorganized areas. The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment manages the program, according to a release from officials. ....
