(NEW YORK) -- Weeks of shoulder pain landed a reluctant Whitney Nichols in urgent care. As a previously healthy 24-year-old Black woman, she pleaded for additional testing to uncover the cause of her pain. As a last resort, the doctor ordered a CT scan of her chest. The result, blood clots in both of her lungs.
To address the severe mental health crisis in Black and underrepresented communities, a new approach that considers historical context and community self-determination is necessary, including asking new questions, supporting existing community support networks, and engaging in practices that address the impact of past traumas.
If we are truly committed to changing the mental health outcomes for Black men, then we must start with four priority areas.
