The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is pleased to congratulate one of this year's Frankfurt Conservation Award (Bruno H. Schubert Prize) winners, the highest endowed private environmental prize in Germany - Julia Miranda Londoño, WCPA Deputy Chair and former Director of the Colombian National Parks Authority.
All four winners of the Award have all contributed in their own way to keeping the Amazon rainforest away from the critical 'tipping point'. The largest rainforest on earth stores billions of tons of carbon dioxide every year and contributes to the climate regulation of our planet and even has its own self-sustaining climate system. Since a large part of the precipitation in the Amazon basin comes from the water that evaporates from the forest itself, with a warmer climate, even more deforestation and increasing numbers of fires, the precipitation could decrease more and more, bringing the forest to a critical limit, the tipping point. The World Heritage List includes several sites situated in the Amazon rainforest, including:

Germany , Cartagena , Bolír , Colombia , Maloca , Parár , Brazil , Frankfurt , Brandenburg , Peru , Canaima , Cesar

Tania Zaven - site manager of Byblos
Each year, International Women's Day is the occasion to celebrate the role of women and encourage gender equality in everything that we do.
Women play a crucial role in managing World Heritage sites. To mention just a few, there are Tania Zaven, site manager of Byblos, Christina Sinclair, site manager of Edinburgh, and Beverly Wade, national focal point for the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, all doing little-known and fantastic work at preserving sites in often difficult circumstances.
The growing contribution of women in World Heritage conservation in the face of the numerous global challenges today, from climate change to the COVID-19 pandemic, is invaluable. Increasing the number of women decision makers is helping to make sites everywhere more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, promoting well-being and cultural diversity. Improving the representation of women in managing cities is also essential in leading to improved public spaces, effective security and community well-being.

This year’s theme for World Wetlands Day ‘Wetlands and Water,’ highlights the importance of wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages action to restore them and stop their loss.
The UNESCO World Heritage Convention works continuously with other entities to protect the most important wetland systems in the world. Wetlands are currently protected under different designations, including the Ramsar Convention on wetlands, the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme and others, and some of these overlap. According to the World Heritage Review on Wetlands, more than 130 Ramsar sites are wholly or partially inscribed in 90 World Heritage sites, and all of these places have exceptional properties.
