Reduced air pollution in China linked to lower suicide rates; reveals environmental policy's mental health impact.
The suicide rates increase substantially when air pollution rises, and the effect was particularly strong in the elderly, with older women 2.5 times more at risk than other groups.
A study conducted in China by researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, suggests that lower air pollution levels may be associated with reduced suicide rates. Over a five-year period, efforts to reduce air pollution in China are estimated to have prevented 46,000 suicide deaths.
Issues like air pollution are often framed as a physical health problem leading to a spectrum of acute and chronic illnesses such as asthma, researchers said.
