Landry, Watt trade blows on south-east mine project


Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry has called on Queensland Senator Murray Watt to advocate the expansion of the New Acland mine, 180km west of Brisbane, to the State Government.
The High Court of Australia last Wednesday ordered new hearings into the planned expansion of New Acland, after spending four months considering an appeal from Oakey Coal Action Alliance against the expansion of the coal mine.
”Now is the time for Senator Watt to stop talking and to start doing something,” Ms Landry said.
“Don’t leave it until the weekend, don’t leave it until next week – do it right now.” ....

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) will ask the State Government to provide certainty around the process required to approve an expansion of New Hope Group’s New Acland coal mine.
The QRC’s request comes after the High Court today referred an appeal by a small group of environmental activists against the expansion back to Queensland’s Land Court.
Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said New Hope and the Queensland resources industry is looking for an assurance from the State Government that if the approval application is returned to the Land Court, the next ruling from the Land Court won’t be further delayed by challenges and appeals by activists. ....

The High Court ruling in favour of Queensland farmers opposing the proposed expansion of the New Acland Coal Mine is a “hammer blow” to the community, LNP natural resources spokesman Pat Weir says.
Resource sector representatives are calling for clarification from the state government over what is needed for expansion of the Darling Downs mine to be approved but Acting Premier Steven Miles said no decisions would be made while the case was before the courts.

Premier under pressure to save cursed coal mine

Pressure is mounting from both sides of politics on the Palaszczuk Government to step in and approve the long-delayed New Acland coal mine expansion with hundreds of jobs on the line.
There are calls urging the State Government create new laws protect and push forward with the mine s expansion, as the Bligh Government did in 2007 with the Xstrata Wollombi mine.
