Delhi was hit by unexpected floods when waters from the Yamuna river reached peak flow rates of 3.5 lakh cusecs on July 11. Heavy monsoon rains in the river's catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand contributed to the rise. The Hathnikund barrage in Haryana's Yamunanagar, 180 km from Delhi, controls the flow of Yamuna towards Delhi.
