Pandemic has not had significant consequences for the freedom of speech of CEE countries, since in most of them (apart from Ukraine) the situation had already been deteriorating before the onset of COVID-19 – writes Karolina Zbytniewska, chief editor at EURACTIV Poland.
COVID-19 and the Quality of Media Publications The fact that the number of coronavirus cases began to rise, stimulated a similar rise in the public’s demand for information. First of all, because people were simply concerned and confused, which spurred their demand for knowledge about the public health situation. For instance, in Poland the percentage of people worried was growing day-by-day and reached 75 per cent by mid-March 2020. Consequently, more people stayed at home and checked the situation online, especially the medical sections of online papers and news channels were promoted to the forefront or simply created to meet the soaring demand. ....
