It is understandable that the historic COP26 pledge to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 was greeted with some scepticism. Similar pledges like the 2014 New York Declaration on Forests committed to halve deforestation by 2020. Yet the international community fell well short of this target, and in fact, between 2019 and 2020, primary rainforest destruction increased by 12%.
