One of two men involved in the case of Niko, an abused dog who garnered support from the community, was convicted and arrested today. Zackery Anderson was sentenced to 100 days in the Young County Jail after accepting a plea in county court this week for the March 2023 offense of animal cruelty. The charge was related to Niko, a Dogo Argentino dog, which was surrendered to the Humane Society of Young County.
The filing period in Young County opens tomorrow for political subdivision seats up for election in May. City council and school board positions in Graham, Olney and Newcastle are up for election with applications available at each individual entity. The filing period opened Wednesday, Jan. 17 across the state. Applications to file can be submitted to local political subdivisions through Friday, Feb. 16. The election will take place Saturday, May 4 at polling locations around Young County.
Young County and the cities within its boundaries received positive sales tax allocations this month for sales made in November by businesses that report sales taxes monthly. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday, Jan. 10, that the state will be sending cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations this month, 3.3% more than in January 2023.Local sales allocationsGraham
Hazardous cold weather conditions are predicted by the National Weather Service to hit north and central Texas early next week, with many areas dropping below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. According to NWS, a strong cold front will arrive the night of Saturday, Jan. 13 which will bring cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Along with the cold temperatures will be a chance for light winter precipitation the night of Sunday, Jan. 14 through Monday, Jan. 15 with mainly light snow north of Interstate 20 and a wintry mix in other locations.
A Graham man was arrested last week on five counts of possession or promotion of child pornography. The arrest was related to an offense from August 2023. Austin Lasatt Cantu-Navarez, 26, of Graham, was arrested Friday, Jan. 5 and booked into the Young County Jail. According to a probable cause affidavit, Cantu-Navarez was arrested for promoting visual material electronically that depicted a child who was younger than 18 years of age, at the time the image was made, engaging in sexual conduct. The offense occurred from 4:56-5:39 a.m. Aug. 24, 2023.
