I pitched an ambitious idea called Young Creators Project, a 3-month-long program that invites young creators all over LA to submit their work to KCRW, an opportunity to amplify their voices across our channels.
This week, KCRW’s Young Creators Project is highlighting the work of two visual artists: Cici Apitz, a senior student at Redondo Union High School, and Kaia King-Hall, a 20-year-old from Venice.
Kaia King-Hall’s drawing for Young Creators Project pictures a powerful nude figure lunging forward into a cityscape. She joins us to talk about the effect taht the male gaze has had on her, and how she is using her drawing to reclaim her power and celebrate her gender.
Sophmores Josue Monterroso, Jose Lopez, and Solomont Lytle-Hernandez, otherwise known as JSJ Photo Collective, meet up after school to take photographs of their community in Koreatown. They join is to talk about how their pictures of Latinx food vendors tell stories and celebrate community.
Arianna Louie’s self portrait for Young Creator’s Project is oil painting collaged with photographs of her as a toddler. She joins us to talk about how the piece looks back on her former self, and also speaks to her Chinese-Korean American identity.
