Correspondent YOUNGSTOWN — While reporting on an anti-poaching patrol along a road leading to a nature preserve in the small African country of Burkina Faso, Spanish journalists David Beriain and Roberto Fraile were killed when armed terrorists reportedly fired on their convoy. When they were killed April 26, Beriain and Fraile, a war reporter and photographer, respectively, joined the list of 58 journalists who have been slain because of their professional activities since 2020. Eight have died so far this year, according to Reporters without Borders, an international organization founded in 1985 to defend and promote freedom of information while protecting journalists worldwide. The organization also records actions by governments to impede a free press.
May 2, 2021 FOOD DONATIONS: Niles Community Services is holding a cereal drive through May 29 at the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles. The effort is to help feed residents of the community. Cereal boxes can be dropped off at the library. All brands of cereal are welcome. Donors are asked to make sure donations are not open or expired. During the observance, which will be livestreamed on the press club’s Facebook page, press club members will read the names of 50 journalists killed while serving their communities in 2020 and five additional journalists killed this year. The list of journalists slain because of their activities was compiled by the Reporters Without Borders, an international organization dedicated to defending freedom of the press.
