Volunteer fire brigade gets green light for utility vehicle

Having a four-wheel-drive vehicle for emergencies will save an ambulance from beaching itself.
The vehicle was expected to get final approval when the plan was adopted later this year.
The brigade raised more than $30,000 towards the almost $95,000 vehicle, mainly through a golf fundraiser held earlier in the year.
The truck would be kitted out with a water tank, winch and first-aid equipment and was expected to service not only the beach, but incidents across Horowhenua and Manawatū where a FWD vehicle could be required.
Horowhenua councillor David Allan was delighted to see the account was being used to assist not only Foxton Beach, but the wider community as well. ....

Councillors vote for basic year-round pool in Foxton

Foxton Pools will become a year-round venue after councillors voted to spend $2.6m on it as part of their Long-Term Plan.
The Foxton Pool is set to become a basic year-round pool, with the hopes of adding more features if external funding is sourced.
The future of the 13-year-old Foxton Pools is in limbo, after its building was deemed irreparable and in need of demolition.
The Horowhenua District Council consulted the community on what to do as part of the Long-Term Plan, and gave people five options; an indoor and outdoor leisure pool, a basic all-year pool, a seasonal outdoor leisure pool, a seasonal outdoor basic pool, or permanently closing the facility. ....

Horowhenua community fights to save its war memorial hall

Group acting chairman David Roache says the memorial hall is very important to Foxton.
Roache said the council spent about $21,000 on the hall annually according to a 2018 report, and the group was only asking for $10,000 for six years.
The group predicted the hall would be self-sufficient in its seventh year.
“We believe we are saving the council money.”
Roache said the hall would not be retained if sold because it was not commercially viable, but it was an important part of Foxton’s history.
He said the land was gifted for a war memorial, and with government funding and community fundraising the funds were raised to build the hall. ....

Damaged Foxton Beach wharf in need of repairs

The Horowhenua District Council is looking at its options to repair the wharf.
Council infrastructure development group mamager Brent Maguire said repairs were likely to include a sloped rock wall that reduced coastal erosion by absorbing wave energy.
It would also include concrete work, with new footpaths and a car park.
“While we are there, we will take the opportunity to improve public amenity as well as carrying out the necessary repairs.”
The council did not know when the work could be completed and was waiting on a detailed design, and compliance and consent conditions.
Maguire said costs were estimated at $350,000. He did not know how much each party would contribute. ....
