A Massachusetts businessman and philanthropist gave each of the 490 graduating students at Quincy College a $1,000 cash gift.
Graduates received two envelopes at Quincy’s May 22 ceremony and each contained $500. Keynote speaker
Robert Hale Jr., 54, CEO of Granite Telecommunications, said half the cash was for them and he urged the grads to use the rest to pay it forward,
“You have persevered in the pandemic, and you haven’t had a chance to celebrate the last 14 months like you should,” Hale said in his address. “And you have seen society and the needs of society grow. We wanted to try to address both of those areas.” ....

Peddling in a pandemic: Annual Pan-Mass Challenge bike ride goes virtual, raises $50M


BOSTON — Pan-Mass Challenge founder Billy Starr knew early on he wouldn’t be able to get 10,000 people together this summer for the annual cross-state bike ride that over four decades has raised more than $700 million for cancer treatment and research.
He also knew he couldn’t just take the year off.
When the coronavirus pandemic forced other sports-related fundraisers to cancel or drastically lower their goals, the PMC went virtual and delivered $50 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The money helped the hospital pay for personal protective equipment, continue with clinical trials and other care, and even went toward rent or groceries for patients who couldn’t just wait until the virus outbreak was over. ....
