Close rugby friends, such as Taranaki local Conrad Smith, were always suggesting he pay a visit, he said.
“They would tell me all the time how great it was. It was quite nice to find out what else there was to see.”

Taranaki Civil Defence acting regional manager Todd Velvin said it was difficult to police people heading to beaches but overall he was happy with the public s response to the tsunami warnings.

Warnings aplenty but tsunami surge hardly noticed in Taranaki

Civil Defence advised everyone to stay off beaches and inshore areas and warned of strong and unusual ocean currents virutally nationwide.
The warnings had little impact on the few people already at New Plymouth beaches or on the Coastal Walkway, which stayed busy throughout the day.
