Former Dhaka city Mayor Sayeed Khokon has expressed solidarity with the businessmen opposing the Dhaka South City Corporation s drive to evict illegal shops at Gulistan s Fulbaria Super Market-2.

Khokon also laid into his successor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, raising questions about his competence to serve as mayor of Dhaka South during a human-chain protest in front of the Supreme Court on Saturday.

Bringing allegations of corruption against Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former mayor Sayeed Khokon today said Taposh has lost eligibility for the post.
The former DSCC mayor made the allegations at a human chain, held in front of the Supreme Court in Dhaka this afternoon.
Reading out a written statement, Khokon said, Taposh has been very vocal against corruption since he took charge as the mayor. I would tell him, a big fish lecturing small fry on corruption is ironic. ....

DRIVE AGAINST ILLEGAL SHOPS
Amid such a situation, DSCC recently started a drive against shops, which were built violating the main design of the supermarkets.
The city corporation on December 8 and December 17 demolished several hundred illegal shops at Fulbaria Supermarket-2 and Sundarban Square Market in Gulistan.
Contacted, Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said they will continue their drive and demolish all the illegal shops from the DSCC markets gradually.
Traders and shop owners, however, protested the DSCC move, saying that they have documents from the city corporation to operate the shops. ....

INSTALMENT of the automated traffic signal system in the city s four intersections went in vain due to theft of a computer with software from a warehouse. The incident also left uncertain the fate of the government s move to bring the city s all busy intersections under the intelligent traffic system (ITS), though the government has a plan to introduce ITS at 16 other busy intersections. The traffic system in the city is in long mess despite taking several initiatives and projects for discorded efforts, inept operators, and inconsistence of the efforts. We know unscientific signal system is also cited as the cause of the aggravating traffic congestion and its spread into surrounding areas, drastically cutting the speed of vehicles. ....
