Local prosecutors ask feds to review Park Police shooting

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) State and local prosecutors in Virginia are asking the Justice Department to reconsider its decision not to prosecute two U.S. Park Police officers who fatally shot a motorist after a stop-and-go chase in 2017.
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and Fairfax County Commonwealth s Attorney Steve Descano wrote a letter Wednesday to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Herring and Descano are pursuing involuntary manslaughter charges against against the officers, Lucas Vinyard and Alejandro Amaya, in the shooting death of 25-year-old Bijan Ghaisar after a chase on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. But the prosecution is facing numerous hurdles because federal prosecutors, after a two-year investigation, elected not to charge the pair. ....

Judge to Hear Evidence in Fatal Shooting of Bijan Ghaisar – NBC4 Washington

“I’m very, very ecstatic that finally after three-and-a-half years we’ll have a day in court where the evidence comes out and people can actually see how brutally my brother was murdered,” Ghaisar’s sister said.
The two officers, Lucas Vinyard and Alejandro Amaya, have been indicted on manslaughter charges in Fairfax County, where the shooting took place, but the case has been moved to federal court after the officers claimed they have immunity under the Constitution’s supremacy clause, which says federal law is the “supreme law of the land” and takes priority over state law.
The shooting of the McLean accountant was recorded by a Fairfax County police officer’s dashboard camera and appears to show Ghaisar slowing pulling away from the officers when they opened fire. ....

Virginia woman accused of pretending to be lawyer, targeting immigrant community

A Virginia woman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly pretending to be a lawyer for immigrants.
Jasmine Moawad, 45, worked out of an office in Tysons, targeting members of the Latino community who “may fear immigration consequences” if they were to speak to the police, according to a statement by Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano.
Moawad would collect payments for legal services from her clients that she didn’t perform and is not licensed to perform. Moawad called her fraudulent service “Americanos for America Party Incorporated.”
“We in Fairfax County have no tolerance for individuals who prey on our immigrant neighbors. Immigrants make our community whole and my office will always do everything in our power to safeguard Fairfax County’s immigrant communities,” Descano said. ....
