Fairfield County voters renew parks district tax levy in 2-to-1 vote

LANCASTER - The only countywide issue in the Fairfield County primary election has passed with a two to one margin.
The tax levy renewal for the Fairfield County Historical Parks District, a .4 mills, 10-year levy, will generate approximately $1.4 million annually, according to Todd Younkin, the Fairfield County Park District director.
According to unofficial results, the levy renewal received 6,904 (66.94%) votes for, with 3,410 (33.06%) against it. There were a total of 10,314 votes cast.
In an interview Wednesday morning, Younkin said he and the rest of the parks staff were excited about the results.
Going into any election, you don t want to think about the negative, but with a pandemic, you have to keep in mind voting numbers can be low. But we re happy with how things worked out, he said. I m always hopeful the county residents will turn out, but I knew this was an odd year. Our supporters did come out, and we re excited the renewal has passed. ....

VOTE! Board of Elections open for early voting until Election Day

One countywide issue will be decided, and some more localized issues are also under consideration.
Fairfield County Board of Elections Deputy Director Brett Riffle said there have been a decent amount of early voters since the beginning of the early voting period in April.
There was more interest going into this election than we thought. In the first two days, we had about 20 to 30 people a day, which I thought would have been the total for the entire election, Riffle said. But it s been steady every day. (As of Thursday), we ve had 590 early voters here in the office.
He added the board of elections has mailed about 1,000 ballots to citizens around the county, and about half of them have been returned. ....

Park district asks residents to renew tax levy to grow county parks

LANCASTER The Fairfield County Park District is asking county residents to renew a .4-mill levy to continue to fund the district.
The levy was originally passed in 2011 after several similar attempts. It is the only countywide issue on the May 4 ballot.
Todd Younkin, the Fairfield County Park District director, said the money generated by the levy will be used maintain and operate parks and attractions, including covered bridges and nature preserves, in the district, as well as acquisition of land for future park projects.
He said the renewal is essential to the district, so it can continue to grow what has ben built in the last 10 years. The levy generates around $1.4 million a year. ....
