FREEPORT After spending the last 16 months not playing in front of a live audience, Bill Petersen directed the Highland Big Band in front of a park filled with people Thursday night in downtown Freeport.
More than 120 people gathered for the first in a series of music events for Music at Debate Square. Some sat in lawn chairs. Some ate ice cream from nearby Union Dairy.
“We got the band together with five people, and as more got vaccinated, the number grew to 15, Petersen said. It has been more then a year since we played, and I spent much of it listening to music in solitude. So I selected music that reflected a year of solitude building up to jazz to celebrate being back into the community.” ....

FREEPORT With yet another severe winter storm, and bitterly cold temperatures and blustery winds forecast for the Freeport area this weekend, people without permanent shelter are looking for places to keep warm.
City officials and social service agency leaders are working together to help identify locations for emergency shelter. The main area of refuge for homeless individuals is the Freeport Area Church Cooperative shelter location at 514 S. Chicago Ave. FACC Director Jay Hurder said the shelter already has been busy this winter season and he expects to see the same faces this weekend.
The people out there that really need it are already here, Hurder said. ....

FREEPORT Against the backdrop of snow falling, Ryan and Sheri Dyson of Freeport spent Saturday making their rounds to make donations to nonprofits for the holiday season.
After making food donations for the Freeport Area Church Cooperative drive at Bocker Automotive, the couple’s next stop was to deliver toys for a drive sponsored by the Cedarville Lions Club for the Salvation Army. Their next stop would be at Friends Forever Humane Society.
I’m a Christmas person, Sheri Dyson said. I know people can’t always afford things or be as fortunate as we are, so Ryan and I decided to make this day about giving.” ....
