Women make up growing share of prison inmates in Wyoming and beyond

RIVERTON â Compared with 14 years ago, a lot more women are in prison.
Thatâs the case in the Wyoming Department of Corrections, which saw a roughly 36% hike in female incarcerations in the past decade and a half. Statistics show itâs also the trend nationwide.
âNationally, female crime incarceration has grown faster than any population,â said WDOC Director Daniel Shannon in a recent interview with The Riverton Ranger. âItâs about 8% per year.â
In Wyoming, that number has grown about 3% from year to year, with a total of a 35.6% gain from 2006 to 2020. The growth is disproportionate to the menâs plight: During that span, the state prison population for men dropped overall, from 507 to 431, with a spike of 572 in 2013. ....

Riverton resident arrested on domestic charges involving a minor

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
(RIVERTON, WY) – On November 24th, 2020 Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a call for domestic violence at a Riverton residence.

This resulted in the arrest of, William Eugene Lewis, 35, of Riverton, with multiple counts of battery, resulting in one felony and four misdemeanor charges.
Lewis, who
is facing up to 12 years in prison, was charged with Unlawful Entry into an Occupied Structure, False Imprisonment, Endangering Children, Domestic Battery, and Property Destruction and Defacement.
According to court documents, the victim had locked Lewis out of the Riverton residence. He became angry and allegedly entered the residence by force with a âbilly bat.â ....
