Updated: 12:25 PM EST Jan 28, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff A beloved nurse in western North Carolina has died at the hospital where she worked after battling COVID-19.WSCO reported that Madalyn McMahan was described as a mentor to many other nurses throughout her career at Caldwell UNC Healthcare.“Madalyn was known by all the nursing, respiratory and medical staff as the matriarch of the night shift on the telemetry unit,” said Rebecca Smith, chief nurse at the hospital. Family members said McMahan contracted the coronavirus in early January and was hospitalized for 12 days before she died Monday.“The very people she worked with side-by-side every day were the ones who took care of her,” her daughter, G’Lellier Matthews said.WSCO reported Matthews, who was also hospitalized with COVID-19 and now requires oxygen as she recovers, said her mom loved being a nurse and helping others.“She loved the people there, the small community, and she loved ....
