Scheme to crack down on Oxford's rogue landlords approved


A SCHEME aimed at cracking down on rogue landlords will be rolled out to thousands of privately-rented homes across Oxford.
Oxford City Council has now approved two licensing schemes aimed at improving conditions and driving up standards in the private rented sector.
At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening, councillors agreed to renew an additional licensing scheme for all houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and to introduce a selective licensing scheme.
If the scheme receives the go-ahead by central government, this means that all privately rented homes in the city will need to be licensed.
Plans for both schemes were strongly backed by Oxford tenants, campaigners and stakeholders in an independent public consultation last year, which received nearly 2,000 submissions. ....

Hundreds of households in Oxford made homeless during pandemic
MORE than 200 households in Oxford have been made homeless during the first six months of the Covid-19 crisis despite round-the-clock pledges from the Government to protect people.
A total of 325 families applied to Oxford City Council for homelessness support from April to September last year, a period which includes the peak months of the pandemic.
Of these, 208 were already homeless, and a further 112 were deemed at severe risk of homelessness.

Students win battle against NOPS
TENANTS in Oxford celebrated a hard-won battle against a local estate agent after a row over a bedroom.
The five Oxford University students sharing a house in Cowley were in dispute with North Oxford Property Services (NOPS), which they rented a nearly £3,000-a-month house from in September.
The argument started at the beginning of November after the agency asked one of the students, Aleisha Lanceley, to quit her spacious bedroom because of problems with the HMO licence.
The students sought the help of tenants union Acorn Oxford and, after weeks of negotiations, the estate agents has now agreed to pay Ms Lanceley a £200 compensation. ....
