North End to Easton's and Sachuest beaches will have a RIPTA shuttle

Newport Daily News
Editor s note: With the unofficial start of summer on the horizon, The Daily News is examining issues related to Aquidneck Island s beaches. This is the third in a four-part series to get you ready for the season.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority plans to run a beach shuttle from the North End of the city to Easton’s Beach in Newport and Sachuest Beach in Middletown on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between June 19 to Aug. 22.
While the service is being welcomed by Newport officials, the same cannot be said of the reception it has received from some members of the Middletown Town Council. ....

DEM Offers Tips on Preventing Conflicts with Coyotes

The Department of Environmental Management is advising Rhode Islanders that with the beginning of spring, they are likely to see an increase in coyote sightings as adult coyotes enter the pup-rearing season and begin to search for food for their litters. DEM reminds residents to remove any potential food sources from their properties and not to feed coyotes or any wildlife.
Coyotes are keenly intelligent, extraordinarily adaptable, and willing to eat almost any available food – whether natural, including small animals, birds, insects, and fruits; scavenged roadkill; or easily obtainable human-provided sources such as garbage, pet food, birdseed, and compost. The key to minimizing interactions and conflicts with coyotes is reducing food sources available to them around our homes and neighborhoods. Coyotes that rely on natural food sources remain wild and wary of humans. Feeding coyotes – or any wild animal – however, makes them less fearful of people and they can become c ....

Walking RI: Farmland jaunt in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH  After hiking most of the winter on Rhode Island’s mainland, I traveled to Aquidneck Island to explore a different landscape. I was not disappointed by the beautiful scenery and the history.
The Gentleman Farms owned in the late 1800s by the Vanderbilt, Taylor and Barstow families stretched as far as the eye could see and down gentle, green slopes to the Sakonnet River.
The stone walls, farm lanes, cart paths, sweeping fields and other evidence of the land’s rich past are still visible while walking the Sakonnet Greenway Trail.
The greenway includes 10 miles of public trails that loop through woods, pastures and marshland and around a golf course, soccer fields and still-active farms. ....

Newport restructures Pell school bond debt for $1 million in savings

Newport Daily News
NEWPORT – When the City Council develops a budget for the coming fiscal year that begins on July 1, it will have an extra $1 million to plug in because of school bond savings.
City Finance Director Laura Sitrin told council members Wednesday night the city issued general obligation bonds totaling $28.575 million on June 20, 2013, to finance construction of the new Pell Elementary School. These bonds were essentially loans from the Rhode Island Health and Educational Building Corp., taken at an average bond interest rate of 4.4%.
The city wanted to take advantage of the lower interest rates that are currently prevailing around the country, since there are about 12 years left to pay off on these Pell bonds. The balance on the bonds will be $17.22 million as of June 30, 2021, Sitrin said. ....
