Archaeological work conducted in 1996–1997 determined that a Patawomeck settlement on Potomac Creek, where the creek empties into the Potomac River at Marlboro Point, dates to around AD 1300. The Algonquian-speakers likely intruded on the area from the north and lived behind a palisade designed to protect them from various warring groups. By 1607, when the first English colonists arrived at Jamestown, the Patawomeck lived north of Accokeek Creek on the south bank of the Potomac River. Their principal town, surrounded by a palisade, was Patawomeck. Based on accounts published in 1612 and 1624, they numbered from 160 to 200 men, and English observers suggested their tribal name translated to “trading place.” ....
Virginia guitarist Daniel Bachman has announced a new album. Itâs called Axacan and itâs out May 7 via Three Lobed as part of the labelâs 20th anniversary series. Along with the announcement, Bachman has shared a new song from the album, âCoronach.â ââCoronach is a type of âfuneral dirge,ââ he said in a press release. âThis tune is my own lament for lives lost to COVID-19 and emotions related to the failings of western society in handling a pandemic. Route 1 bridge repairs continue this week [Photo: VDOT Fredericksburg District] Route 1 southbound in Stafford County will remain reduced to a single lane at Accokeek Creek over the weekend as an emergency repair continues to a bridge rail and guardrail. A truck struck the Accokeek Creek bridge rail on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 17, and crews started an emergency repair early this morning, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. While repairs have been made to the bridge’s concrete rail, additional time is needed for the concrete to set and coordinate guardrail installation around nearby underground utilities. The right travel lane cannot safely open to traffic until the guardrail has been reinstalled. ....
