When the image of a library comes to mind, itâs often stuffy and still, pairing literature with silence. Conversely, mention of a hip new coffee shop might conjure images of young professionals, glowing Apple logos, and the clattering rush of keyboards.
But when Bev Tumi Makhubele and Naledi Yaziyo picture their creation, Rofhiwa Book CafÃ©, they see color, accessibility, and a celebration of Black culture. Rofhiwa will be located on the southwest corner of Angier Avenue and South Driver Street in Old East Durham; the name means âwe have been givenâ in Tshivenda, a language of South Africa. ....

Things were going pretty well during a city council meeting this month for Ian Bracken, who requested a $102,000 economic incentive grant to help open a modest sandwich shop and grocery with a rooftop garden in east Durham.
Bracken, who purchased the late 1940s red-brick building for $130,000 lastÂ May, envisions a place where the facade remains unchanged. He wants to replace the awning at the entrance to protect his patrons from the elements. In an area that s pretty much a food desert, he wants to teach neighborhood youngsters how to grow and cook their own food. ....

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) Most people in East Durham know Darius Russell by name.
People trust us especially when you look at Black and brown communities, Russell said. There s a lack of trust. Maybe even more that we have to build relationships.
Russell and his wife own the independent drug store on Angier Avenue that bears his name. He s also the pharmacist.
You think about just how pharmacies help physicians give out flu and shingles shot, he said. We re not trying to step on anyone s toes but I think we can be part of this as healthcare providers in the state, in this community here in Durham and in the country. ....
