Assam Assembly Session from May 21

GUWAHATI: A three-day Assam Assembly session has been summoned by Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi. This would be the first sitting of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly. The session would start on May 21.
According to sources, on day one, May 21, all the newly elected 125 MLAs (barring the pro-tem Speaker) will be administered the oath of secrecy. The pro-tem Speaker will have to take oath before the Assembly Session.
On May 22, the Governor would address the Assembly and on May 24, the concluding day of the three-day Assembly session, the motion of thanks for Governor s speech has been scheduled. May 23 is Sunday therefore there will be no sitting of the Assembly.

In the recently concluded Assam Assembly Polls, BJP led alliance won 75 out of 126 seats. The saffron party alone bagged 60 seats while Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 9 seats. The United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda conducted crucial meetings with Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.
In the first two rounds of meetings, BJP leaders met Sonowal and Sarma separately whereas in the third round of meeting, they met both the leaders together.

Outgoing CM Sarbananda Sonowal proposed his name after tendering resignation to Governor Jagdish Mukhi
Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the 15th Chief Minister of Assam.
Outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal proposed his name as the BJP Legislature Party leader soon after tendering his resignation to Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Sunday.
State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass and the newly-elected Nandita Garlosa seconded Mr. Sonowal.
Mr. Sarma, who became the BJP’s chief poll strategist after switching over from the Congress in 2015, was later named as Mr. Sonowal’s successor.
It pointed out that the Commission has already directed chief secretaries and state police chiefs to take penal action, including lodging of an FIR, against violators in all such cases under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and other relevant laws.
