Iraqi Christians hold Christmas mass in town retaken from Islamic State (IS)
Iraqi Christians from a town recently retaken from IS have held a Christmas Eve mass for the first time in two years. But with the frontline in the battle for Mosul nearby, few have returned to their homes.
Iraqi Christians attended a Christmas Eve mass for the first time in two years in the northern town of Bartella, which was retaken from the self-declared Islamic State (IS) group two months ago.
The Assyrian Christians held the service at Mart Shmoni Church, its church bells ringing under heavy guard for fear of attack by IS militants. Church-goers sang and prayed in Syriac, the language of Jesus. ....

British Museum Decided Against Uniting a Cursed Assyrian Stele and Bad Luck Fell to the Police

If the stele was united it would measure 2.1 meters (6.89 ft.) tall. The king depicted on the stele ruled between 810 BC and 783 BC. His stance shows the ruler alongside sacred symbols: the winged sun disc of Shamash; the star of Ishtar; and the thunderbolt of the weather god Adad. The king holds his right hand in a gesture of worship while his left hand contains a mace.
There is also cuneiform script on the sides and across the front of the king’s body. It reads:
“…Negal-eres, governor of the country of Rasappa… presented an image of Adad-nerari III, king of Assyria, his lord, to the god Salmanu, his lord, who protects the throne of his priesthood, to give into his hands the sceptre that shepherds the people, for the well-being of his seed, the well-being of the people of Assyria and the well-being of Assyria, to scatter his adversaries, to destroy his fierce foes, to subdue his enemy princes.” ....

Batnaya, North Iraq Churches still lie in ruin six years after the Islamic State (ISIS) swept through the Nineveh Plains, with others slowly rebuilt by Christians returning to the remains of their villages.
The St Qaryaqous Chaldean Church in Batnaya, 20 kilometers north of Mosul, has not been rebuilt due to a lack of aid.
Najib Batrs grandfather built the church in 1944.
At least 70 percent is destroyed. We can t rebuild it. It is still in ruins. We ask for someone to rebuild it, be it the international NGOs or the central government, he said. ....
