Giving: Hartman receives service award named in her honor

Dr. Cheri Hartman recently was honored as the first recipient of a service award named for her.
The Cheri Hartman Service Award, given by the Community Youth Program at St. Johnâs Episcopal Church, recognizes a person who has given exceptional time, energy and resources in volunteer service to youth and families in the Roanoke Valley.
Hartmanâs resume meets all the criteria. She has served CYP, a year-round academic and enrichment programming for Roanoke City Public Schools students, as a founder, board member, advisor, mentor, advocate and friend, according to the award.
With her energy and dedication to children and families, Hartman exemplifies the values of CYP, âTogether weâre changing lives,â a news release said, adding that Hartman âfocused her career on science-driven approaches to the prevention of school dropouts, teen pregnancy, obesity, and substance misuse, and worked primarily with youth, until her shift into the addiction tr ....

ALBION â On a day when the Albion Rotary Club announced a back-to-normal meeting schedule, it chose to honor someone in the community who does so much more than normal.
Albion Rotarian Joy LeCount introduced Jason Brown, 43, as the clubâs Citizen of the Year during Thursdayâs luncheon gathering at the Albion Pizza Depot.
âI was surprised,â Brown said. âI was shocked. It feels awesome.â
LeCount had invited Brown to speak at Thursdayâs meeting under the guise of a program involving Brownâs work with the Indiana Deaf Camp. Brown and LeCount did do that program â and it was a big reason LeCount said Brown was deserving of the honor. ....
