Controversy trails killing of student by Amotekun in Oyo On By Ola Ajayi, Ibadan CONTROVERSY has trailed the alleged killing of a suspected armed robber by men of the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Amotekun. While the outfit claimed it didn’t kill a student, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) accused it of killing one Akolade Gbadebo, a 400-level student of the Federal College of Education Special (SPED), Oyo (with affiliation to the University of Ibadan). Though, the outfit said the “suspected robber” the Chairman of NANS joint campus committee in Oyo, Mr Mayowa Opakunle, insisted that the deceased student was shot dead by one of the Amotekun corps, who were invited to clear a road barricade made by students around Sabo area of Oyo town. ....
Amotekun The Oyo State Security Network Agency, Operation Amotekun, yesterday, denied that its operatives killed any student of the University of Ibadan, contrary to the scenario painted by some students. It would be recalled that some youths and students in Oyo State on Thursday stormed Oyo State Government Secretariat, protesting the alleged killing of Akolade Gbadebo, a student of the Federal College of Education Special (SPED), Oyo town, affiliated to the University of Ibadan, by an officer of the Oyo State Amotekun Corps. They accused Amotekun Corps operatives of involvement in circumstances that led to Gbadebo’s death. But a statement by its Commandant, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (rtd), said Amotekun corps operatives only had an encounter with a three-man robbery gang, neutralised its leader and handed the two surviving members to the Atiba Police Station in Oyo town. ....

The National Association of Nigerian Students had claimed that Amotekun killed Akolade Gbadebo, a 400 Level student of the Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo with affiliation to the University of Ibadan. The students’ association said Gbadebo was not an armed robber. But in a statement made available by Amotekun in Oyo State on Saturday, its Commandant, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd.), said its men had an encounter with a three-man robbery gang and killed its leader. Amotekun added that the two surviving members of the robbery gang were handed over to the Atiba Police Station in Oyo town. ....
