690 landmarks turned a familiar shade of shamrock green last night, as the world marked a subdued St Patrick s Day.
The Irish national holiday on 17 March has been adopted as an international celebration of the Emerald Isle, stout ale and
bráithreachas. However with much of the world still affected by Coronavirus restrictions, many of the traditions and parties could not take place.
However, one of the newest traditions was able not only to go ahead, but to grow in scale.
The Global Greening is in its 12 year, which sees global landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil being lit in green light. ....

New York City has officially purchased the property at 227 Duffield Street, a 19th-century rowhouse in Downtown Brooklyn recently designated as a landmark for its ties to the abolitionist movement. The Landmarks Preservation Commission last month granted landmark status to the home, occupied by known abolitionists Harriet and Thomas Truesdell from 1851 to 1863, after years of advocacy and a threat by a developer to raze it and build a mixed-use building in its place. First Lady Chirlane McCray, who has been a vocal advocate for the preservation of the site, announced the purchase during Mayor Bill de Blasio’s briefing on Monday and said the deal ensures the property will be “protected and celebrated for a very long time.” ....

Chicanos, the Census, and Celia Cruz: Inventing 'Latino'

The Atlantic
The answer involves Chicanos, the census, and Celia Cruz.
March 11, 2021
Do Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and Cubans share an identity? The answer wasn’t necessarily clear before 1980.
That’s when the Census Bureau introduced a pair of new terms,
Hispanic and
Latino, to its decennial count. The addition was the result of years of advocacy and negotiation: Being counted on the census meant the potential for far more government action, yet the broad category oversimplified the identities of an immense and diverse group.
“The way that we define ourselves is consequential,” says G. Cristina Mora, a sociology professor at UC Berkeley. “The larger the category, the more statistical power it would have.” ....

'Sacred' Indigenous landmarks are everyone's to enjoy

The extinct volcano, sitting across the NSW border in the Tweed Valley, attracts tens of thousands of people every year who climb its peak to enjoy the sunrise and a view that stretches to the Pacific Ocean.
Freedom of Information documents obtained from the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service show it has drawn up hitherto secret plans to close the walking track to the mountain, named by Captain Cook in 1770, from November next year.
In Queensland, Indigenous elders have made it clear that they would like to see Mount Tibrogargan and Mount Beerwah in the Glasshouse Mountains and nearby Mount Coolum declared off-limits. ....
