WWF forest regeneration study

FORESTS THE SIZE OF FRANCE HAVE REGROWN IN THE LAST 20 YEARS
New study showing the capacity of forests to regenerate themselves will help guide smarter reforestation projects in the fight against climate change.
Nearly 59 million hectares of forests – an area larger than mainland France– has regrown since 2000, according to new analysis published today by Trillion Trees - a joint venture between WWF, BirdLife International and WCS. This area of forest has the potential to store the equivalent of 5.9 Gt of CO2 – more than the annual emissions of the US.
The study points to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil as one of the success stories for regeneration, where an estimated 4.2 million hectares – an area roughly the size of the Netherlands – has regrown since 2000, through a combination of planned projects to restore the forest, more responsible industry practices and other factors including migration trend towards cities. ....

France-Sized Area Of Forest Has Regrown Since 2000 Worldwide

When was the last time you heard good news about the planet’s forests? While many of the planet s vital forests are still neck-deep in a whole load of trouble, a new study has demonstrated how some forested areas possess a remarkable ability to spring back and regrow if given the chance.
Since 2000, an area of forest the size of France has regrown naturally across the world, according to a new analysis. That’s enough forest to store the equivalent of 5.9 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide, more than the annual emissions of the US.
“The data show the enormous potential of natural habitats to recover when given the chance to do so. But it isn’t an excuse for any of us to wait around for it to happen, John Lotspeich, Executive Director of Trillion Trees, said in a statement. ....

Bunge: We are committed to using our position and scale to lead the industry s progress on deforestation
By Jane Byrne
Agribusiness giant, Bunge, last week announced it was launching a new monitoring program in the Cerrado, becoming the first global company to foster mass action in that region to track indirect purchases of soybeans.
The company said the move will have benefits for the entire supply chain.
The Cerrado, writes the WWF, is one of the most threatened and over-exploited regions in Brazil, second only to the Atlantic Forests in vegetation loss and deforestation:
“Unsustainable agricultural activities, particularly soy production and cattle ranching, as well as burning of vegetation for charcoal, continue to pose a major threat to the Cerrado s biodiversity. Despite its environmental importance, it is one of the least protected regions in Brazil. ....

Unusual breeding behavior reported in treefrogs for the first time

Paranapiacaba Treefrogs (
Bokermannohyla astartea) mate and lay spawn in small pools of water inside the tanks of bromeliad plants, Leo Ramos Malagoli from the Universidade Estadual Paulista in Brazil and colleagues report in the open-access journal
PLOS ONE. The 3cm-long tadpoles must then make their way to a stream to complete development. The study, publishing February 17, is the first to report this unusual reproductive strategy in frogs.
The researchers spent 11 years collecting data on the courtship behaviours, mating, spawning, and tadpole development in this little-known species, which is endemic to the Atlantic Forests of Brazil. They observed Paranapiacaba Treefrog males calling from bromeliad ponds (known as leaf-tanks ) located on the banks of streams. Females mated with males inside the leaf-tanks and laid their spawn there, but the researchers found that the tadpoles did not complete their entire development in the tanks. Tad ....
