Dan Fumano: Campaign finance reforms respond to controversy in 2018 vote

Article content
B.C.’s municipal elections next year will look a little different than the last time, with new rules that will likely affect things like union-funded electioneering and developers anonymously buying billboards.
The 2018 municipal elections were the first after the B.C. NDP government introduced stricter campaign finance rules, banning corporate and union donations and setting $1,200 donation limits. Daphne Bramham: Vancouver mayor hangs hopes on drug decriminalization

Article content
Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart recently called the opioid overdose epidemic “one of the greatest policy disasters in the history of the province.”
Listening to him, it’s hard for some people not to conclude that the violence and dysfunction on the city’s Downtown Eastside would largely disappear if only we had: decriminalization of all drugs for personal possession, a safe supply of drugs to every addict, and “wraparound services” for those with the most severe addictions and mental health problems.

There is good news for anyone who has ever wanted to hold an audience with the Mayor of Vancouver while wearing pyjamas at home on the couch.

Inside Vancouver City Hall’s Housing Wars
Voters demanded action on affordability. What they got is so weirdly split we tried to map the mess.

When Vancouver voters last went to the polls, the most pressing issue for two out of three was the housing crisis. Tight rentals and skyrocketing home prices were shutting out younger and lower-income residents, and the Vision Vancouver government was due for a shellacking given that 85 per cent of those surveyed said the job it had done was either “bad” or “very bad.” ....
