A warning has been issued about leaving items in coffins with loved ones
A CREMATORIUM has asked families to resist the temptation to leave personal items in a coffin.
Placing personal items with the people that have died is a custom that dates back thousands of years and exists throughout many cultures.
Historians have found that ancient Egyptians, Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons all did this and the bereaved continue to have an understandable compulsion to follow the practice today.
But Crematorium and Memorial Group, which operate Wear Valley Crematorium, in Bishop Auckland, is asking families not to leave such personal items in the coffin without asking first as they may unintentionally pose a safety or environmental risk. ....

TRIBUTES have been pouring in following the death of a former dale man whose charity has helped more than 5,000 disabled children take part in sport.
Chris Read, who founded the charity A Smile For A Child, died on January 20, aged 55.
Now hundreds of supporters are to wear the charity’s colour of purple when he is laid to rest on Monday, February 8. Over the 12 years since he founded the charity from his home in Barnard Castle Mr Read raised about £1.8million for good causes.
Mr Read was born and raised in London and attended Hendon School before going on to work for supermarket group Waitrose. ....

Family of charity founder Chris Read vow his 'legacy and shining light will never be extinguished'


A community has remembered charity founder Chris Read, from Barnard Castle, following his sudden death.
The 55-year-old set up A Smile for A Child nearly 14-years-ago while on sabbatical from his supermarket career.
It provides grants for disabled and disadvantaged children, allowing them to participate and progress in sport.
Over the years his non-stop fundraising and charity challenges have included everything from bag packing to running one of the hardest marathons in the world along the Great Wall of China.
He took on the feat with his son Ben and together they have completed more than 150 marathons between them.
Mr Read even once used his running skills to tackle crime when he outran a shoplifter. ....
